GIVING US ALL 'SOMETHING WE CAN FEEL'

So much talk is going around about whether or not Beyonce has or hasn't once again copied works for her newest video COUNTDOWN.

My thing is why are we upset either way. The fact is that artists take inspiration from one another. It has been that way for as far back as we can remember. And is there anything really wrong with that. Madonna copied from movies for her videos. Rappers use 'rifs' constantly in there music. Even the latest Jay-Z and Kanye song is a huge re-incarnation of music originally done by OTIS READING.

There is nothing new under the sun and if an artiste pays homage 'with respect' where is the dishonour. Copying is one of the greatest forms of approval there is. It is testimony that someone thinks sooo much of what you do that they are willing to copy or re-express it in their own way. In many ways this is what life is about, and it is not copying as much as it is exposing a newer, younger group to the works of the past.

Perhaps, what needs to be done is to acknowledge the legends of the past more actively when their works are used, and in that way not only do we continue their greatness, but we excel in ensuring that our own does ot look as if it has been built on the unappreciated bones of others. So perhaps the question is not if she were inspired but rather whether she acknowledges the inspiration.

Even now as you read this WHITNEY HOUSTAN and JORDIN SPARKS have been touted to be in the remake of the classic movie SPARKLE. Yes, yet another movie based loosely on the life of Diana Ross and the Supremes and while not as well known as DREAMGIRLS it does feature the iconic song

"GIVING HIM SOMETHING HE CAN FEEL"

(jordan is expected to play the lead role of sparkle, while whitney is down to the the role of her mother)

RIHANNA @ O2 - so much to say.....

The first thing that struck me about Rihanna's show at the O2, was the 'demographic'.
The stands were almost entirely filled with 16 - 18 year old blonde, white girls. Even up here in the VIP BOX that was owned/catered to for STANDARD CHARTERED saw my industry film friend and I together with some 8-10 hugely anticipating teenagers most of whom were of the aforementioned demographic.

Rihanna slinks on stage having replaced her now almost signature red tresses for the bouncy curls of the younger Ri-Ri that bounded onto the scene and into our lives many years ago. Perhaps it was the channelling of this younger version of self that left us
'excited but not moved' throughout almost 2/3 of the show. Maybe, it had to do with what was a obviously mucked up sound system that left us wanting more but not in a good way. It wasn't till her rendition of SO HARD followed by the remaking of 'prince' pieces like 'glamourous life' which found her not just Banging away on drums but almost banging some life back into the performances.

Either way the earlier part of the show saw quite a few people leaving early to avoid the rush and crush of exiting the 02 later or making rather frequent trips to the bar.

BUT BOY DID THEY MISS OUT....

Up till then - I love you Ri-Ri - but I was steadfastly unswayed. Both emotionally and physically. Like so many fans loving the music, but not quite getting the energy that we could see flowing off her and eight '8' energetic dancers. It flowed..., but just didn't reach over to us.

By the time she started crooning 'I don't want do this anymore' one of my own personal favourites I was actually glad that fans on the tarmac had taken to singing loudly along. The sound system was lacking enough for me to sit and almost write this entire blog throughout her performance.

But the seated in a flowing yellow dress at stage right 'hate how much I love u' was easily the best rendition delivered. Followed later by 'California King Bed' and the stands EXPLODED and by the time the show was winding down on and the song 'Take a Bow' started to play..... well let's just say fans sang the entire first verse instead of her while the cameras panned a close up on her face, blushing and mouthing the words WOW over and over. She explained that we were all part of history that night, she had just scored a number 1 hit in the UK and as the Golden thunderstorm of 'Umbrella' closed the show it was easy to feel like you truly were part of history.

Still I have to say for myself, Like so many of the fans that left a little bit early, I felt a tiny bit let down. The show was GREAT!! But it was not spectacular. Blame it on the sound system or on it being the first show of the gig. But on the way home talk was not about what a 'WOW' show people had been too, but centred firmly on let's not miss that tube to get home people.

This legion of lyrical 'super-heroes' deliver raw and unedited the thoughts of a generation

and the consciousness of their peers.

PHANTOM - 25 YEARS ON....

When I was invited to see the rather exclusive full dress rehearsal of the the Phantom of the Opera yesterday, I had in mind, "another musical". Now don't get me wrong I loooove musicals, more than most. But there are some productions that I somehow think, well you've run your time.

WELL THE PHANTOM HAS SHUT ME UP!!!

The costuming is incredible in that I think the detail work on those dresses can be seen even up in the nose bleed seats.
The staging unparalleled in that you are 'effortlessly' carried from location to location with the actors as they wend their way through, tunnels, along rooftops and of course within the Phantom's theatre itself.
And the performances.....

BREATHTAKING, from the very first notes, the performers tug at your heartstrings literally reminding you why this is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's greatest accomplishments.

Now this isn't something I would normally be referring to on my blog,

but if you as I, are easily swayed by a truly haunting love story, and doubly so by animation on almost every level, then make sure you don't miss this film. And if not for any of that, then how can you NOT be absolutely floored by the music of Havana, reminiscent of the style of the Buena Vista Social Club and equally as touching.

Cuba, 1948. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey - in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero - brings heartache and torment. From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love.

The story artfully weaves within it's education of the period the tale of one of the pioneers in Latin Jazz of that time, none other than Luciano "Chano" Pozo Gonzales. The hot-tempered Chano Pozo was the first in a long line of Latin percussionists to have performed with the legendary giant Dizzy Gillespie, the godfather of Latin jazz in the U.S.

He, Pozo was killed in a fight at a bar in Harlem, New York, at the age of 33, allegedly over an argument regarding the quality of a bag of marijuana he had bought from his assassin. He and many other great performers of the era are artfully woven into the soundtrack of the tale.

Though I had posted a few images on facebook I think I like others are not giving the credit due to the team of individuals that are working so hard to produce this popular alternative to the Notting Hill Carnival every year. The HACKNEY ONE CARNIVAL is an event that has been growing from strength to strength over the years and 2011 was no exception. For 'true masqueraders' it's a chance a week after Notting Hill and while still in the after-glow of the UK carnival season to have ONE LAST CHANCE to don a costume and PLAY A MAS.

IS IT REALLY OVER???

That's the question that flooded my mind as I woke up this morning or rather this afternoon after sleepin' in for most of the day. Carnival IS really over. I spent most of the night last night at dinner with two friends talking about that sence of euphoria that comes over you in the middle of the celebration of Carnival, and Nottinghill is no exception; more so J'Ouvert.. It is truly leveling and humbling.

No matter who we are, whether a top end model just spotted on the street; or gracing the pages of a multimillion dollar fashion campaign, Carnival has the power and ability to make us all one. For that is what it does. The stevedore and the bank manager hold hands as they gyrate to pulsing rythms that lead the way to ensuring that at the heart of it all we KNOW what is right.

There are no isms or politricks, no dem and we, just us and if we can exist together in such joy and abandonment for ONE DAY...., why not longer. Why not for life.

NOTTINGHILL HOTTING UP!!!

It's Friday, the end of the week and the beginning of celebrations that will either see you headed out to Manchester Pride, or just generally getting out of the city for the Bank Holiday Weekend or if you is Trini to the Bone like me, making final preparations for the Nottinghill Carnival.

I had the pleasure of getting up close and personal when 3CANAL was on stage at CALO's launch at Alexander Palace

and had a whale of a time on stage with my band that I'm playing with this year SUNSHINE INTERNATIONAL ARTS.

I'll be taking in a healthy dose of ABIR this Sunday, and then all that will be left is to cross London's version of the big stage this Monday in the section entitled

'DREE VAY CHILE' Fitting isn't it.

So have a good weekend, whatever you get up to.

PLAY HARD, but PLAY SAFE.

I've been bringing you images of in and around LONDON,
to highlight everyday locations that we pass by everyday.
To show you them in a new light.
To perhaps open your eyes to seeing them in a new way.

I didn't go into the riots 'purposely' hoping to capture images of people
at their worst. But I did have to go to West Croyden.
And though the riots were over, the aftermath definately falls into the
category of seeing things in a new light.

there have been riots and revelations, updates and upheavals,
trials and tribulations and through it all we stand firm..., so why not me?

It's been quite some time since I've blogged,
I think in a lotta ways my 'spirit' was broken.
But I am blessed with the most AMAZING friends and family
and I am learning to better appreciate my faith
and to look at the little miracles that occur around me everyday
rather than waiting for signs in floods, or people walking on water.
The real test in not to walk on water or fly in the sky but to walk on the earth.
Somehow I have managed to pull through it all.

Now I look forward to letting go of the past,
and looking towards the future.
Secure in the knowledge that even though I may NOT know what it [the future] will bring
that WHEREVER I end up, that is where 'I' will be.

'I' ..., that is myself...,
pure, unadulterated and with no additives or preservatives...,
'I' will be there.

Not 'I' , as I believe the would like me to be...
Not 'I' , as I think I should portray myself to the public...
Not 'I' , as someone skulking in corners and hiding in doorways...

I AS IN ME. AS I AM WITH NO APOLOGIES.

For at the end of the day...,
if we are true to ourselves,

from the point of view of a photographer, I believe firmly in the adage that "the best camera is the one you have with you". For no matter the instrument, much lies with the person that wields it.

These are images.., in an around, out and about; all taken with my 'iPHONE'.
The purpose is to make you look again; glance around a second time. Revisit the place you pass on a daily basis. Come to see the world through mine eyes.
Not that i think my view is all that important, I wish only to give a new narrative to the story.

Another London Fashion Week draws to a close, and with part of my team back in school and another off on vacation (we missed ya RYAN) running around to the shows wasn't as much fun as in the previous years. But as always a show NOT to be missed was ZIAD GHANEM, for fashion both ON and OFF stage.

Fans of the talented designer gathered for the 8pm show despite london weather at it's worst, and piled into the Freemason Hall venue in Covent Garden for yet another unique presentation for his A/W COUTURE 2011 collection.

Veils, ballerinas, full figured models, joker-inspired make-up, transexuals and a KICK ASS music selection all helped to make the show one of his best to date, But as always it was his immaculate sence of both drama and design that continued to weave magic in his creations, drawing increased numbers at each presentation he holds.

series was started as a way to both discover and work with up and coming talent within the fashion industry. To give them a chance to broaden their skills and

in working with them to give back to the many models who constantly give of their time and energy by gracing my lens.

We started mid 2010 so we did only six (6) men. But now we're on a roll.

For 2011, we hope to do one each month so as to have the FULL year's compliment and also to give back to their female counter-parts with the launch of our

"FACE TO WATCH"series.

"well, I'm 19 and as you may or may not know I'm Bulgarian. Moved here to England when I was 11 and ended up playing football for READING ACADEMY.

Although I've done a little bit of acting this is really my first full-fledged foray into modelling.
So I'm really grateful the the chance and lessons passed onto me by RasConrad and his team.

At the moment I'm running my own car valeting business, and enjoying doing my own thing.

We're LATE, but he's well worth the wait.

Kai just turned 23 from Oxford, is a full time personal trainer and boxing instructor and in his free time is now a fashion model.

He's been modeling for around 6 months.

He first got a job for Richard Austin Rees on a yacht for the Maria Buccalleti Beach Couture Fashion Party, and from there it snowballed to getting work every weekend.

Since then he's been seen doing all sorts of commercial and fashion photography and recently did his first catwalk for Danish Wakeel's fashion show which was where he was 'spotted' by the RCp crew.

"I love the modeling industry, you get to meet great people along the way and make some really good friends. I hope to continue on to bigger and better jobs and see what i can achieve within the industry." - KAI

A COMMENT on the BEEFTA's

A lot of comments are flying back and forth about last night's events. And I had thought to stay out of the fray (in very much the same way i stayed away from the festivities - I attended the show, did photography at a customers request BACKSTAGE, took some shots on the red carpet and promptly left even before the what was an almost 2hour late start).

But with sooo many people asking my opinion on it this morning I think I WILL comment here.

Many things went WRONG!! Seating, refreshment, running order. And we are quick to judge because we expect 'standards'. And rightly so. And while we are quick to take note of those things that DID go wrong, because they were so 'glaring', let us not forget the many people that were hard at work on the things that did go right. The lightening and sound techs, the make up and hair people that worked ceaselessly backstage from 9am till show start AND BEYOND. I was there with them, I saw the effort they put in to make the night come off a success.

And yes things went hopelessly wrong, but while we primped and preened at home at turned up immaculate and flawless, many people behind the scenes worked tirelessly to ensure that there WAS INDEED A NIGHT TO ATTEND. They are the unsung heroes of an event that is catering to support and make mention of people within an industry that perhaps sometimes get passed over.

If I question anything about the awards, (and i do not in any way take away from those who won in specific catergories) I question judging criteria that awards winners based on popularity and not necessarily quality of work. I question the nomination process where someone can be nominated for an award and have to be informed by another NOMINEE rather than the governing body/committee. I question striving for excellence yet catering to nepotism.

This said, it is early stages. Rome was NOT built in a day and the old adage goes, and if we are not open to fact that so much has be done by these awards to boost the confidence of so many within their fields; to recognize their efforts in the continued strides for excellence and creativity and to bolster their faith in the products and services they develop and provide, then we have truly missed out on the beauty and achievement of the BEEFTA's.

If only to be stood in the company of so many talented and beautiful black brothers and sisters, gathered in one place to celebrate OURSELVES.., if only for that... then the night was a success.

Legacy Falls, a new musical about a fictional American daytime soap opera, is to premiere at London's New Players Theatre. It will begin performances Oct. 27, prior to an official opening Oct.29, for a run through Nov. 20.

Written and composed by James Burn, a former assistant musical director on Disney's The Lion King at the Mogador Theatre in Paris, and directed and choreographed by former performer turned film director Ian Poitier, the show was previously staged in Bermuda in 2003.

According to press materials, the show exposes the bitchiness and back-stabbing behind the scenes and in front of the camera on a fictional American daytime soap opera, from (in Poitier's words) "the romances and the hair-pulling cat-fights...the hirings and firings…the bikinis and sex scandals…the tantrums, the deaths...and a slightly unrealistic earthquake…"

The cast includes Amy Anzel, Aimie Atkinson, Ezra Axelrod, Rosalind Blessed, Davis Brooks, Joanne Heywood, Tara Hugo, Mark Inscoe, Tim Oxbrow, Stephen von Screiber, Bart Williams and Pippa Winslow. Sets and costume design is by Georgia Lowe, with lighting by Mike Robertson, sound by Andrew Johnson and musical direction by Michael Bradley.

It is produced by Danielle Tarento and Choughed Productions Ltd, established by Warren Cabral.

Burn and Cabral previously co-wrote the musical Joan of Arc in 1994.

WOO HOO!!

after all the joy that was NottingHill Carnival this year, londeners got the chance to take to the streets again this time at NIGHT for the THAMES NIGHT FESTIVAL. I just had to do it all again, which left me pretty laid up and the worse for wear on the monday morning after i tell you , but it was totally worth it.

Together with other members of Sunshine International Arts whose band I followed and worked closely with this year; a great production team and two male models (One of them my MAN O' DA MONTH - ROGER) we took to the streets for ONE LAST JUMP UP.

and what a jump up it was.

'Carnival' this year was on everyone lips as the best nottinghill carnival for years, and i can truthfully say THEY WEREN'T WRONG

The 'RC' Team just came back in from ALEXANDER PALACE, doing photography and commentary for the Parade of Costumes (KING, QUEENS and INDIVIDUALS) for the SPLASH showcase held up there.

Just a few hours rest and then off to see one of my male models as he is filmed on location for next summer's BLOCKBUSTER film. (he's made the casting call as an extra. BUT WHAT AN EXTRA!!!)

Can't name the movie or the location folks, but think DC COMICS. WE're proud of you boy. See ya on the big screen. WOO HOO.

And speaking of SCREEN, next update is on one of London's hottest new actors that just finished appearing in one of this year's hottest films HARRY BROWN.

I first worked with RU on my TRIBES it's coming shoot

and then had the pleasure to work with him again on EN ÉTÉ,

and the growth this newcomer is showing in front of the lens is nothing short of phenomenal.

This DJ turned model has been seen turning up at a number of different castings and promotional events recently, and at each and every one, he easily becomes the centre of attention and the hot favourite. And it's easy to see why.

CALVIN's ain't NEVER looked THIS GOOD.

Look for him as he takes to the ramp for next season's FASHION WEEK,

en été - the imaginary summer fragrance from the mind of RASCONRAD.

A photographer is oftimes only as good as the subject in front of his lens and the team behind them. I continue to be blessed in both respects.

Earlier this summer

a team of models

(big thanks to Ru, Zola and our supermodel OLU),

a stylist who couldn't make the shoot on the day

but laid out all the clothing, accessories and shoes for us

on the night before

( - Thanks KEVON)

and a WICKED MUA,

(anytime, anywhere SPARKLE)

came together for a shoot that had models, in and out of the freezing water in Brighton - to no avail, as you can see none of those shots were used - riding a kiddie "choo-choo train" - and being photographed on the edge of a nudist beach all for the love of the craft.

You guys are the true talent. And as always I ceaselessly APPLAUD your efforts, and give thanks for your faith in me, even when sometimes I don't have the faith in myself.

COLOURS - the concert

Every now and then I get to step away from fashion photography in order to do, cover or take part in some other type of event from behind my lens. One such recent event NEEDS to be mentioned. It is this event that has drawn me back to my blog.

By now you know that if you don't here from me on here for awhile; it's not that I have given you guys up, but rather that I am hard at work creating. For this is my challenge to myself to continuously push my own boundaries. Moreso now that I have also taken on the 'assistance and mentoring of' the extremely talented personage of Dushane Casteallo.

Yes my readers, Batman has found his Robin, and as this DYNAMIC DUO strikes out let nay-sayers beware. LOL.

But no seriously, an extremely motivated and talented young man, with an incredible eye for video and photography. Be sure to look for more from this rising talent who has already produced my RCP2010-03 video edit: ZOLA TEST SHOOT, and is at this very minute hard at work on the video edit from the shoot of the COLOURS dance project.

But back to COLOURS...

A story about the ups and downs of relationship depicted through colour and dance.

We follow the affluent reds and the ghetto fabulous blues on their journey of union

whilst dealing with the influences of society.

The cacophony of rich colour blended with the exuberance of these young performers

lent itself to an evening that was as "unforgettable as it was entertaining".

The production, directed and choreographed by Michelle Scarlett recently came off at the Oval House Theatre and was a resounding success that engaged the talents of a host of young performers including one that is no stranger to the RasConrad lens.

Linton Clarke (model) donned a different outfit as one of the productions lead male dancers and showed that where talent is concerned that he is definitely more than just a pretty face.

While each performer shone in their solo performances special mention needs to be made of two performers who for me stole the show.

The opening act in the second half of the show;

Gareth Mort (navy blue) - "In my mind" brought the house down with is moves

Patrice Anderson

(gold) - "Freeze" was quickly labelled golden girl on the night and with her moves it was easy to see why.

Cathy Kasozi

(deep red) - "A piece of me" a solid and easily recognizable talent throughout the showcase and Liam Sane (purple) - "Cold Case Love" who provided so many moving and captivating moments throughout his performance, that it was easy to see why he was a photographer's favourite the night.

Jade Anderson (amber) - "Upstairs" moving soliloquy

through dance was the prefect offset to the real life drama and spirit of Ceryne Miller-Grant (mint) - "Sleeping with a broken heart" who steadfastly went on even while in pain and regretably had to be taken away in an ambulance on the second night. A credit to all the performers. The nights renditions as said before was one not easily forgotten and eagerly anticipated for round two.

GOING HOME

A couple of days ago my experience as a novice buddist was heightened by a visit to the Taplow Centre.

For many buddists a kind of "re-charge" centre and why wouldn't it be with it's rich history;

spectacular archetecture and overall sence of PEACE and calm.

This accompanied by the rich lessons learnt therein

and not just in the lectures

but just in wandering the grounds,

meeting other novices and elders,

sharing life experiences undernearth a canopy of calm

was precisely what anyone

in fast-paced London would welcome

at the drop of a hat.

There is a saying that when Sensei opened the doors many years ago,

he remarked to all gathered,

to come in " THIS IS YOUR HOME!"

and like so many first time visitors before me,

I truly felt that overwhelming sence of peace

of returning to a place you had been before,

where you had loved and laughed, cried and shared.

A place you could truly call home.

BENEATH THE PAINT - TRIBES it's coming!

When I came up with the idea for this shoot I had no idea how much on POINT it would be.

TRIBES it's coming - was a 'tongue in cheek' look at people, their social standing; their ethnic differances and how little or how much of a difference it really made in todays society.

An imaginary FASHION TRIBE if you will, was created; using a multitude of heights, languages, skin tones, backgrounds, sexes, sexual preferences, apptitudes within their profession [modelling], religious backgrounds and of course, LOL general likes and dislikes.

Individually, based on attire (read as 'genus) they were made-up, painted, transformed into a singular tribe, by dint of now being joined together by the masks created, the make-up, the FASHION. They were then taken on a walk, 'a spiritual journey', to a place they had never been to before and here on these 'mourning grounds' , they were tested, they joined as one and they were transformed.

For no longer were they black or white, male or female, straight or gay, they...., WE, BECAME that TRIBE. And even now, (I know becasue it has been communicated back to me, by differeing people in various ways) that there is a special feeling that each person that participated in that event feels. A 'special' warmt at being, for that brief moment, part of something that was different; special. Truly TRIBAL and PRIMEVAL.

"it's coming" was a two-pronged message, both of doom AND elation.

The TRIBE; [our tribe;] was symbolically joining together. Proving that no matter the type of mask you wear in your day to day lives; no matter the PAINT you put on, we're all the same underneath and we should ALL learn to love and respect the differences between ourselves.

But "it's coming" was also a message of doom.

A message that if were didn't work together;

if we chose NOT to look past the paint to the person beneath;

that as easily as we were joined for the purposes of a photo-shoot so too,

far too easily lines could be drawn between

neighbours of differing RACES, because of how we voted;

or age old friends because of who we chose to support in what debate.

And in this way it heralds a warning of a return to an earlier age of tribes.

based purely on how they commune with their God.

Or the jailing of two men for simply loving each other,

or relations in the Caribbean over what should be

a celebration of yet another 'first'.

We need to move forward,

we need to continue to celebrate these differences

we sometimes chose to keep hidden.

We need to reach out PAST the PAINT,

or we will be reaching back BACK INTO OUR PAST.

The "MAN O' DA MONTH"

series was started as a way to both discover and work with up and coming talent within the fashion industry. To give them a chance to broaden their skills and

in working with them to give back to the many models who constantly give of their time and energy by gracing my lens.

We started mid 2010 so we did only six (6) men. But now we're on a roll.For 2011, we hope to do one each month so as to have the FULL year's compliment and also to give back to their female counter-parts with the launch of our

"FACE TO WATCH"series.
